What is media literacy?
Media literacy can be explained as one's ability to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the mass-media. The mass-media includes television, music, newspaper & magazine, internet, radio, and any other form of communication that reaches large numbers of people. It is important to be able to navigate these media, because they allow one access to a virtually unlimited amount of information. Information is power, so it can be inferred that access to unlimited information is access to unlimited power. So, to be media literate is to be powerful.
On the other side of the coin, those who control the media have the most power. They have the power to control the information that we receive. Thus, they control the type and amount of power that we have. Sadly, the mass-media seems to be run by those who only want to give us the power to consume mass quantities and conform to the will of our leaders, both governmental and corporate. However, being media literate allows one to fight the powers that intend to enslave us to their will.
Join me on a mission to become more powerful through media literacy, and at the same time try to deflect the power that those who control the mass-media weild against a truly democratic society.
